The women&#8217;s 8K had a fast start, with athletes pushing the pace early into the race. She won by more than 10 seconds, clocking 26:31, while Nankivell claimed silver in 26:42. In her <a href=https://runningmagazine.ca/"https:////runningmagazine.ca//u-sports//jacob-benoit-and-madelyn-eybergen-named-under-armour-u-sports-athletes-of-the-week///">debut cross-country season<\/a>, Eybergen finished in 27:02 to win U Sports bronze.<\/p>\n<p>With the podium contenders separated from the rest of the field, the remaining athletes battled for the overall team title. The UBC Thunderbirds, looking to defend their title, struggled in the absence of reigning individual champion <a href=https://runningmagazine.ca/"https:////runningmagazine.ca//u-sports//university-of-british-columbia-soars-to-double-gold-at-2023-u-sports-xc-championships///"><strong>Katie Newlove<\/strong><\/a>, who sat out due to injury. The pack remained tightly bunched for more than half the race; after the five-km mark, reigning champion <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/runningmagazine.ca\/u-sports\/constance-nankivell-and-philippe-morneau-cartier-named-under-armour-athletes-of-the-week\/\">Philippe Morneau-Cartier<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>of Laval Rouge et Or led the surge that separated the top athletes from the field.
